A few years ago, my brother and I found a list of the top 50 songs about Chicago. While many of the songs were absolute legends, some of them didn’t represent the city as we knew it. “Why don’t you write your own song?” Scott said. And so I did.
That was in December 2011. In December 2012, my brother said, “Can you send me that thing again?”
Since then, we’ve been hard at work composing our song for the second city, titled “The Way to Chicago.” For the video, we pulled as many clips from existing footage as we could to fully represent the Chi-town experience. Many thanks to the creative people who let us use their footage, especially Josh Reichlin who is unbelievably talented and kind.
For the record, the Chicago songs we like include “Sweet Home Chicago” written by Robert Johnson; “The Night Chicago Died” by Paper Lace; “Chicago (That Toddlin’ Town)” popularized by Frank Sinatra; “Lake Shore Drive” by Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah (the most underplayed song on this list which I CAN’T COMPREHEND BECAUSE IT’S SO GOOD), and “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” by Jim Croce, which is only barely about Chicago, but noteworthy nonetheless. Here’s a much longer Spotify playlist I made to keep your Chicago music appetites full and happy.
